Question by Kazi: Advair use combined with steroid for safer alternative?
My son uses Advair and has for 6 or 7 years. He’s 21. Recently, his asthma attacks have gotten worse and the doctor doesn’t seem concerned, but I’ve heard that Advair is related to sudden and sometimes fatal attacks. Has anyone heard of this or know about a combination effect of using Advair with a steroid for a safer alternative? He’s tried taking other medications, nothing works so far like the Advair.

Answer by cyndiann This is the Alternative Medicine section and Advair is not an alternative medicine. You’d probably get a lot more results by switching where this question was posted.

Piribo: New Publication Announcement, Commercial Insight: Asthma/COPD
(PRWEB) August 23, 2006
The respiratory market will continue to experience strong growth for the next 6 years, driven by the expansion of sales in existing classes, the launch of major new products with safety and convenience advantages, and the results of several landmark studies. Despite patent expiries of three leading products, from 2010, the market will avoid a collapse like the one seen for oral antihistamines.
Highlights
Global asthma/COPD sales should grow to over $ 30 billion by 2012 and remain flat thereafter, with inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting bronchodilator combinations set to remain the leading class by value throughout. Anticholinergics will experience the strongest growth, particularly in COPD, to become the second-best selling class.GSK’s Super Advair should become the top-selling brand in the seven major markets in 2015 if the company manages to switch Seretide/Advair prescriptions successfully before Seretide’s US patent expires. The phase-out of CFC-containing inhalers in the US after 2008 will have a big impact on the market for short-acting beta2 agonists (SABAs), more than doubling its size. The main beneficiary will be Sepracor’s Xopenex MDI.

Getting the Most out of Dry Powder Inhaler for Asthma and COPD
New York, NY (PRWEB) April 3, 2008
Proper technique is the key to benefiting from dry powder inhalers (DPIs) that treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. But data presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians suggest that many patients can’t or don’t know how to use their inhalers properly.
Compared with aerosol metered dose inhalers, DPIs are considered “user-friendly”: They don’t require coordination between breathing in and squeezing the inhaler to release medication, and DPIs rely on your breath rather than chemical propellants to get the medicine into your lungs.
But using DPIs requires a measured, forceful inhalation to ensure that the powdered medication gets from the inhaler to deep in your lungs.
If you inhale too quickly, the powder ends up at the back of your throat; if you breathe too slowly or too gently, it doesn’t go anywhere; and if you accidentally exhale, the powder might get blown away.
Aerosol metered dose inhalers, such as albuterol and ipratropium, give fast relief during acute respiratory attacks, but most DPIs are prescribed to control symptoms. If you are not using your DPI properly, your disease can progress, or you may frequently experience acute episodes that require hospitalization.
Researchers from Offenburg Hospital in Germany reported that 32% of 224 patients made mistakes using their DPIs that prevented them from getting the right dose of medication. Errors were most common in patients who were over 60 and in people with severe lung obstruction.
Each of the various DPIs works differently. Diskus models contain several weeks’ worth of individual doses. Other DPIs look more like traditional tube inhalers and might contain individual doses or need to be loaded with a medication capsule before each use.
If you’re prescribed a DPI, ask your doctor both to show you how to use it and then to watch as you use the DPI yourself. Bring your inhaler to each doctor’s visit to double-check your technique.
Common DPIs include:
Advair Diskus
(salmeterol and fluticasone)
Foradil Aerolizer
(formoterol)
Pulmicort Turbuhaler
(budesonide)
Serevent Diskus
(salmeterol)
Flovent Diskhaler/Diskus/Rotodisk (fluticasone)
If you are having trouble, your doctor can prescribe a traditional metered dose inhaler. Combining this type of pressurized inhaler with a spacer–a device that attaches to the inhaler and holds the medication for a few seconds before releasing it into your airways–can reduce problems with hand-breath coordination.

WARNING The long use of inhaled beta agonists such as salmeterol has seldom caused serious asthma related breathing problems. This product contains salmeterol in compound with fluticasone (a corticosteroid). It is not known that adding a corticosteroid changes the risk. Hence, in patients with asthma, this drug should only be prescribed when one long term medication does not control breathing problems. It is important to learn how to use this medication properly. Discuss the risks and benefits of treatment with this medication with your doctor. USES This product is a combination medication of salmeterol and fluticasone. It is used to as a maintenance treatment to prevent or decrease wheezing and trouble breathing caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (eg, COPD, emphysema). It works in the airways by decreasing swelling and relaxing muscles. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. This medication should not be used for sudden attacks of breathing trouble as it does not work immediately. For sudden shortness of breath or asthma attacks, your doctor must prescribe a quick relief medicine or inhaler. You should always carry a quick relief inhaler with you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Do not use other long-acting inhaled beta agonists (eg, formoterol) with this product since this may increase your risk for side effects. In patients with asthma, this medication should not be used when breathing problems … Video Rating: 0 / 5
Question by Ko: What are the side effects of ADVAIR diskus and is it safe?
My Dr. prescribed me ADVIAR and I rememebr seeign the commercial for it but the side effects seemed extreme.
If you have ever taken ADVAIR or if you are common with it, can you tell me the side effects that come with it and if it is really recommended to take?
The thought of steroids does not sound pleasant.
I am very iffy about taking this medicine because I do not have Asthma, but sometimes my bronchial tubes feel tight.
Best answer:
Answer by k. renee. I have been taking ADVAIR diskus for about a week now and I have noticed no real problems with the drug. When my doctor gave me ADVAIR, I showed some concern about taking a steroid twice daily, but she told me that the side effects of this one are not the same as those of say, Prednisone. She said I would have no trouble and I have not had any. I have done some research on steroids because I have been put on them before for my lungs, and yeah the side effects are scary. The reason this one is different is because it is inhaled as opposed to taken orally. Essentially, it gets the medicine only where it really needs to be, in your lungs. I have noticed that I do not have quite as many troubles with my lungs daily, which makes me ever glad to be on it. So good luck, and hopefully you will like me, have no problems with this medication.

Question by Patty5821: Does anyone have a home remedy that works on oral thrush, caused by the asthma medicine Advair?
I take Advair for my asthma, keep getting oral thrush even though I am brushing my teeth after I use it. Really don’t like to take the prescription medicine the doctor prescribes as it only works for a short time.
Best answer:
Answer by imsety See your health care provider as soon as possible for consultation.
The bacterial imbalance that follows use of antibiotics may indeed allow other bacteria or fungi to take hold. Those include the candida that cause thrush. But while the “intestinal flora” supplements you mention have shown some benefits at reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhea, they have not been shown to be very effective at treating thrush. You should treat the candida with an effective antifungal medicine, such as oral fluconazole (Diflucan) or nystatin (Mycostatin), The usual bacterial population will return to your mouth and intestinal tract on its own.
Drixoral cold and Allergy, an over-the-counter drug that’s a long-acting combination of the decongestant pseudo-ephedrine and an antihistamine, has few long term side effects. Some of the short-term effects, such as sedation, may even lessen with continued use. But by using a fixed-dose combination drug, you may be taking more than what is needed to treat your allergy symptoms. If sneezing and watery eyes are your main problem, an antihistamine alone would usually suffice, and the decongestant ingredient in Drixoral would be unnecessary. See your doctor, about Advair side effects. I hope this helps you. And good luck.

Question by Natsuki: How fast does Advair work and what should I be noticing?
Even though I’ve been taking Advair for a good 3-4 years now, I don’t think I’m noticing anything.
How long should it have taken before I began to notice any difference and what should I have been noticing?
And only up until recently (about a month ago) I had still been using my inhaler roughly 5 or more times a day…
Best answer:
Answer by Sheltie7 You should have noticed a difference very quickly, as in a matter of days at the very most and by that I mean breathing a lot easier.
Advair containes an anti-inflammatory and a long-acting bronchodilator working together to help improve lung function and making breathing easier which you don’t appear to be having.
You need to return to your doctor as soon as you can and get a full breathing test carried out and possibly more medication.
Once you start requiring your inhaler more than twice a day, that’s the time to seek medical help.
